"As our awareness of food grows and at the same time the economy gets
more difficult, it's becoming more important for communities to support local
farmers and food producers"
- Patti Stack
Capers & Co.'s Community Kitchen is designed to do just that
- it is a place where non-profits can cook meals for those in need; where students
can learn and chefs can teach.
Patti Stack, a professionally trained chef and former restauranteur, has for
many years served her community via the Sebastopol Community Center, local
education foundations and other groups. Her new adventure combines her love
of community service with her passion for nutritious, and delicious food.
The kitchen, located in a bright Queen Anne-style Victorian at 330 South Main
Street in Sebastopol, is a fully inspected and Health-Department approved facility.
Stack's vision is to share her catering company's kitchen with local entrepreneurs
and individuals to maximize its use and to encourage community cooperation.
Already, the kitchen has regular uses by locals: a chocolatier and two individual
gourmet cookie makers prepare their artisan wares at her kitchen. The kitchen
also serves as a hub for Ceres Community Project, a program combining youth leadership
and healthful cooked meals that are home-delivered to grateful families faced
with serious illnesses. Patti is also in the process of scheduling a series of
cooking classes with local food artisans and nutritionists.

Patti sees a community kitchen as a place where people can
'feed a passion'. "Beyond
that, it can foster volunteerism, education and a heightened sense of community."
